Oscar Pistorius Receives Six Year Sentence For Murder

South African paralympian, Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius was originally found guilty of manslaughter and received a 5 year sentence but state prosecutors appealed the judgment.
Judge Thokozile Masipa, who heard the original trial, told the court: “Public opinion may be loud and persistent, but it can play no role in the decision of this court,”  before handing down a six year sentence for murder.
It is possible that the state will reject today’s judgmeent before the end of today.
Reeva’s parents who criticized to the original sentence have not responded to today’s court ruling but many remain disappointed that Pistorius has received a light sentence.
Pistorius’s lawyers argued that his anxiety and nervousness meant he could not survive in a prison. He hobbled without his prosthetics in court a week ago to show cause but he will now serve his sentence at the prison wing of Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.
