Flood kills 14 wedding guests

At least 14 people were killed Saturday when a vehicle carrying wedding guests was washed off a mountainous road by floodwater and flung into a gorge, an official said.
“Dead bodies of 14 people had been retrieved, most of those killed and wounded were women and children,” Rahimullah Mehsud, a local government official of Khyber tribal district, where the incident took place, told AFP.
The accident happened when a pick-up truck carrying the groom’s party of more than 20 people was hit by floods in a remote village of Khyber, one of Pakistan’s seven tribal districts bordering Afghanistan.
Mehsud said a search was ongoing for the missing but rescue workers and residents were facing difficulties as the “area is remote and mountainous”.
He added: “We have no exact number of those travelling in the Datsun pick-up but residents told us there were more than 20.”
The heavy monsoon rains began earlier this month, drenching the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and central Punjab provinces, which have been badly affected by flooding in recent years that some scientists have linked to climate change.

Nigerian children rescued, mum drowns at sea

Two unidentified Nigerian siblings aged 11 and 10, were rescued in the Mediterranean on Friday after losing their mother while on a dangerous journey to Europe.
The heartbreaking photographs of the boy and girl by Associated Press were published by Dailymail as  they sobbed and comforted each other aboard a rescue boat.
According to Dailymail, the children were part of 150 migrants rescued by an NGO’s boat while trying to make the journey from Libya to Europe aboard an overcrowded craft.
A leading migration group had said more than 3,000 people had died while trying to cross the Mediterranean this year, nearly a 60 per cent increase from this time in 2015.
The latest rescue came after Italy on Thursday launched a hard-hitting campaign on the Internet, TV, radio and social media to warn African migrants of the many dangers they face in trying to reach Europe.

PSG target Real Madrid’s Jese

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Unai Emery said Saturday that the French champions could sign Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez before the end of the transfer window.
The 23-year-old would provide support in attack to Edinson Cavani for PSG, who saw talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic leave at the end of the past season before joining Manchester United.
“It’s a possibility, as are other opportunities in the transfer window,” Emery said during PSG’s tour of the US.
“I know Jese well, the club knows Jese well, he is a good player.”
Jese scored five league goals for Real last season, but struggled to force his way past Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo to get into the starting line-up.
PSG play Premier League champions Leicester City on Saturday in California in their final International Champions Cup friendly, before opening the domestic season in a week’s time against Lyon in the French Champions’ Trophy.

Many Killed As Military Bombards Lagos & Ogun Creeks

OGUN-NL

Scores of militants have been reportedly killed in a joint military operation code-named “Operation Awatse” launched in the Arepo area of Ogun State and some parts of Lagos.
The operation is to flush out the suspected militants that have been terrorising residents in the area.
There has been a lot of commotion. The Nigerian Air Force bombarded Fatola, in Arepo, which is the base of the militants, a resident confirmed.
They are shelling the place with fighter jets. Some soldiers also surrounded the area to make sure that if any of the militants should run out, they would be gunned down.
Another resident of Imushin area of Ogun state told Punch that the attack started sometime around 6pm on Thursday evening.
“An aircraft had actually been surveying the creek for the past three days. But a second one joined this evening around 6pm. All we heard was a sudden bomb blast released from the second aircraft.
“But it appeared that some of the militants had fled into the bush. There are four major bases of the militants in the creek and they are led by two men- OC and Agbala. If the military can get these two people, then they would have succeeded in clipping the wings of the militants,” the resident said.
The Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar also confirmed the operation, adding that it is a routine operation for the purpose of denying the vandals and other criminal elements from causing terror in the area.
Abubakar added, “The operation was initiated by the defence headquarters to dominate the area with a view to flushing out all manners of criminals including militants and saboteurs. The operation involved the joint forces of the navy and army and it has been successful.”
According to the Lagos Police Command’s Spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos: “The Nigerian military and policemen from the Lagos and Ogun commands are part of the operation. We are sweeping through the waterways where we share boundaries to end the activities of the militants. It is a continuous exercise and we cannot tell the number of casualties.”

Budget Padding Scandal Reps invite EFCC, ICPC to probe Dogara, Jibrin, others

Jibrin had alleged that he was removed as Chairman of the committee because he opposed their several shady financial moves regarding the 2016 budget.

Following the budget padding allegations leveled against the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and three other principal officers, the low chamber has said it will investigate the shocking revelations.

The sacked former Chairman, Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin of the House had alleged that Dogara and others plotted to insert over N284 billion in the 2016 budget in the name of constituency  projects among others.
The other accused officers are the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yusuff Lasun; the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; and the Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor.
Jibrin, who was sacked last Wednesday, said he was removed as Chairman of the committee because he opposed their several shady financial moves regarding the budget.
With the scandal plunging the House and it members into disrepute, it said the allegations will be referred to the Committee on Ethics/Privileges for investigation by September 13 - when the House would have resumed from the current annual recess.
The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, stated this when briefing news men in Abuja on Tuesday, July 26.
He said Jibrin will get a fair hearing from the committee to defend his allegations against the four principal officers, adding that the leadership of the House has also decided to invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-graft agencies to look into the matter, including allegations that Jibrin himself abused his office between 2011 and 2015 when he was the Chairman, Committee on Finance.
“He was alleged to have aided the use of front companies that collected funds without executing most of the projects," he said.
“The projects have been compiled and will be referred to the anti-graft agencies to establish why the projects were fully paid for and not executed. Who collected the funds and why has Jibrin not raised the alarm about the non-execution of the projects even now?”

Omisore Surrenders To EFCC, Agrees To Return N1.3bn

Iyiola-Omisore-2-640x431@2x

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a former Senator and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Iyiola Omisore, after he reportedly signed an agreement to refund the over N1.3billion he allegedly received from the office of the National Security Adviser.
Omisore, who was allowed to go home on Friday, after spending about 19 days in the custody of the EFCC, was apprehended in Abuja on July 3, for allegedly collecting the huge funds from a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki – as it was traced to the accounts of five companies allegedly belonging to him.
The money was said to be part of the N4.7bn allegedly disbursed by a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and his two sons, Gbolahan and Babajide.
It was learnt that, the former governor of Osun state, this week, succumbed to the uncompromising pressure from the commission.
Premium Times gathered that he approached the EFCC and agreed to refund the money he was alleged to have fraudulently received.
On Friday, the EFCC granted him administrative bail after he struck a deal with the commission to refund the N1.3billion in instalments.
He paid the first instalment of N300million before he was allowed to go home, this newspaper learned.
Those familiar with the negotiation said before his release on Friday, Mr. Omisore issued a letter authorising his bank to release N170million to the EFCC, being the entire amount in his frozen account.
He also gave the anti-graft commission a draft of N130 million, bringing the first installment of the repayment plan to N300 million.

Commanding Officer, 17 Others Missing As Boko Haram Ambush Nigerian Troops Unawares

Military 1

The Nigerian Army says three officers and 15 soldiers are missing in action following the showdown with Boko Haram insurgents in northern Borno State.
Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, disclosed this on Friday to journalists in Maiduguri, the state capital.
He said that a search party deployed to the area has already established contact with six soldiers and four members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).
Commanding Officer of the Operation is among those still missing in action, as well as unspecified number of members of the civilian JTF.
According to the Commander, the soldiers disappeared after engaging the bandits in what appears to be a reinforcement mission for their dislodged collaborators in a town called “Gongon”.
Boko Haram Ambush
The Army had earlier said that a number of its troops were missing after they ran into an ambush by the dreaded terrorists. The Army explained that the attack occurred while the troops were returning to their defensive locations after operations to clear remnants of the insurgents at Gongon and environs.
The operation led to destruction of the terrorists’ makeshift camps and recovery of various weapons including an anti-aircraft gun, an armored personnel carrier, and motorcycles used by the terrorists.

Nigeria Will Survive Without Niger Delta’s Oil, ”Avengers Are Criminals” – Gov. Masari

Aminu-Bello-Masari

Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, has blasted the Niger Delta Avengers, categorizing the militant group as a bunch of criminals.
He said he suspected that the Avengers might have been part of a threat by some Nigerians to make the country ungovernable, if a particular candidate did not win the 2015 presidential election.
Masari, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja yesterday, asked that “what are they avenging?” in reaction to the name of the militant group, which has sustained months of bombings of oil and gas installations across the Niger Delta.
He said: “As people, we must survive and live. With the crisis in the Niger Delta, we can wake up and see that not a dollar is coming from oil. Are we going to die? It is impossible. Let us start looking inward. We did it before, we can do it now.
“I believe, I still believe and I’m still convinced that when we do the right thing, not only in Katsina State, but across the 36 states, we will survive the storm and there will be no more dependence on any one commodity.
“Any single commodity you depend on, when the price crashes, you will feel the impact. I think your friends outside Nigeria should be very lucky. If you go to Angola, you can’t see effect of the low price because they don’t totally depend on oil.
“For those of us who are able to go to Saudi Arabia, we see these things. Almost 80 per cent of the capital projects have stopped. It is not only in Nigeria.
“But in our own case, coupled with when the prices start to pick up to about $40, then we have the criminals calling themselves Avengers. Avenging what?
“They said before election that if a particular candidate did not win, they would make Nigeria ungovernable. So what is coming now is not new, but Nigeria will survive it. There are countries without oil. Has Japan oil? Do Malaysia, Singapore, India have oil? Are they not surviving or thriving?”
“If there is determined leadership, these things are doable. Most of the problems confronting us as a state are beyond politics”, the Katsina governor asserted.

Why I sent my boys to behead Todays Prints MD –Herbalist

He used to be a famous herbalist, whom some people, both far and near, ran to for help at his shrine at No. 8, Oloti area in Iragbiji, Osun State, since he took over from his father in 2006.
But at the moment, 37-year-old Asimiyu Agboola, known as Alhaji, is cooling off in the custody of the police in Osun State for being the brains behind the killing of the Managing Director of Todays Prints, Olalekan Ogunranti, 45, who was kidnapped on May 16, 2016 in the state.
Ogunranti’s family had alerted the police when they lost contact with him on May 16 when he travelled to Osogbo on a business trip. They said an unknown person picked his call and claimed to have picked the SIM card on the floor at Iragbiji. Thus, they informed the Osun State police command and the Lagos State Investigation Bureau.
A police source told journalists that the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team moved in on the matter after weeks of “fruitless search” for the deceased, which led to the arrest of Alhaji and four other suspects, including Adesina Muyideen, 27, Ramoni Afolabi, 37, Akeem Akorede, aka Jaruf, 32, and Coker Daniel, 28.
In his exhaustive confession to reporters, Alhaji pointed out that Ogunranti was his client before his death but that he duped the deceased of about N3m, thus, he had to send his boys to kill him to prevent him from spilling out the beans.
Alhaji, seen as an expert in the cure of diabetes and fibroid, said the deceased was brought to his office sometime in March by two of his customers, Ramoni and Akorede, for help, which he rendered.
He began, “Five days after they mentioned him to me, they came with Ogunranti and after listening to him. I gave him a bill of N90,000 and gave him drugs and he left.
“Normally, we assess customer’s financial status before giving them bill. So I asked him to pay that amount because the people that brought him said he was rich. I removed N20,000, which is the real cost of the drugs, and shared the balance of N70,000 into two.”
Perhaps that was the beginning of their business relationship. Alhaji, who is married with children, recalled that 20 days after their first meeting, Ogunranti called back and sounded excited, because the drug he gave him worked and that his situation had improved.
“He requested to come and see me again and I said no problem,” Alhaji continued, “As soon as he came, he was so excited and promised to bring more customers. After the discussion, he said he wanted something that would make him rich. I told the people who brought him and they suggested that he must be a good victim to extort. So, I had to play along.
“I told them that I could do it, and that there were two categories of money ritual. The first was to get money and put it in a bag after some important rituals, and the money would multiply. The second would be to construct a big box and keep it in a room. After several days of prayer, he would be picking money from the box endlessly.
Alhaji said Ogunranti chose the first option; the one that had to do with the bag, because he said he did not have a place to hide the box. Then, he gave him the needed instructions.
“Two weeks later, he called that he had gathered N2.5m. I took the money and put ordinary paper and other stuffs in the bag and tied it up. I warned him not to open the bag until he was instructed to do so. I told him to return in four days with the bag. I told him that he was to bathe in a river which could be very close to where he was living. I gave him options and he chose Ijebu area. I also told him to come with N500,000 to buy more ingredients for the rituals.”
Notably, Ogunranti complained to his herbalist that he wouldn’t be able to afford to give out more money because he didn’t have money again. Alhaji assured his client that his money was on the way as they would soon conclude the preparation.
He continued, “I told him not to worry, and that he would soon be rich because what remained was not much. I told him to go back to Lagos that as soon as I got signal from the gods, he would open the bag. After 10 days, he called back, threatening to involve the government. He said he would arrest us. Then, I knew it was time to shut him up, so I called Akorede and Afolabi and we agreed to shut him up.”
That was how Ogunranti’s journey to the bottom began. Alhaji told journalists that he invited the deceased to come with N150,000 and a goat for the final sacrifice and that he would be able to use the money the moment they finished the sacrifice.
Unknown to the former MD, his herbalist had already initiated plans to eliminate him, as he had alerted and paid two cultists, Daniel and Biggie, to do the job, having helped them in the past.
“I did some incantations for them to become powerful when they were in school,” he said, adding that “I contracted them to eliminate the man. They suggested that he should be lured to a remote place where they would ambush him and kill him. “I gave them N120,000 to do the job.
“I knew the fastest way was to lure him to a river to bathe. So, we selected a river in Obokun in Osun State and I asked Olalekan (Ogunranti) to go the river and bathe as part of the final ritual. We assigned a motorcycle rider to take him to the location that we chose, while we were hiding in the bush at a distance.”
Meanwhile, Alhaji had instructed his client not to look back while having his bath and that if he did, the charm would no longer work. Painfully, that was his end.
“Ogunranti removed his cloths and started bathing when Biggie and Coker attacked him. They came to tell us they had killed him and cut off his head. I asked them where the head was and they said they had thrown it away,” he explained.
After the incident, Alhaji said his informant in the police told him the police were looking for him, thus, he had to run. He left his office and stayed in a hotel where he and his driver, Adesina, were later arrested by the police.
He however blamed the economic situation in the country for his action, saying his patronage had dropped because of the poor economy. “I’m a legitimate herbal doctor. It’s just that the situation of the country is very bad. People do not have money to buy drugs again, that is why I decided to take advantage of the situation to make money. It was when he requested for money ritual that I knew that he would be an easy prey,” he concluded.
In his own confession, Coker, son of a pastor, who hails from Auchi in Edo State and a graduate of Ondo State University, said he took to crime since he could not get a job after his National Youth Service Corps programme in 2011.
A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Don Awunah, said the suspects were arrested in Lagos and Ondo States respectively, while one of them, Coker Daniel, who is a 32-year-old graduate, led IRT operatives to Ibukun River in Ibukun local government area of Osun State where the mutilated body of the late Ogunranti was recovered. He said the body had been deposited at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
The statement added, “All suspects confessed they kidnapped, killed and mutilated the body of the late Olalekan Ogunranti to stop him from disturbing them over the huge sums of money they duped the deceased.
“They led the police to a bush near a river where his headless body was found. It was also discovered that his manhood were cut off. Investigation is ongoing to fish out the remaining suspects who are still at large.”

Baptist Pastor’s Hand Amputated After Attack By Suspected Fulani Herdsman (Photo)

4007825_137543362926344110868308918963962083988330n

Just barely two days after a slain pastor, Zakariya Joseph Kurah (ECWA, Obi) was buried, a herder in another part of the state cut off part of the hand of another pastor working on his farm.
Rev. Hamza Alkali, 66, had to have the rest of his hand and wrist amputated. He told Morning Star News he managed to tackle the assailant and wrest the knife away from him or he would have been killed in the attack in Sabon Gida village, near Keffi, on July 7.
“If God was not with me, the Fulani man could have succeeded in taking my life,” Pastor Alkali said. “God was with me, because I told the Fulani man that God who created me in His image will not give him power to kill me.”
Affiliated with the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Pastor Alkali said when he first saw the herdsman coming onto his farm he thought he was just passing through. He continued working when the Fulani came up to him without greeting and asked him to hand over his mobile phone.
“Shocked at the Fulani man’s audacity, I wanted to know from him whether he was asking for my mobile phone because he lost his somewhere, or he was ordering me to hand over my mobile phone to him. The Fulani man insisted that I should give him my mobile phone. I then responded by telling him that I left my mobile phone at home.”
The herdsman then told the pastor he would search him. “I was baffled and wanted to know why he would want to search me,” Pastor Alkali said. “He bluntly told me that if I don’t hand over my mobile phone to him he would kill me.
Then I now told him, ‘You have no right or power to kill me. The God that created me and sent me to this place will not allow you to kill me.’ I repeated these words twice to him.”
Pastor Alkali came to Nasarawa state from his native Kaduna state more than 14 years ago. The herdsman’s intent was first to take away his mobile phone to prevent him from getting help once he attacked him, he said.
“Suddenly, the Fulani man pulled out his sword and attacked me. When I saw the sword he was dangling coming towards my face, I tried to protect my face raising my hands up, and within seconds the sword cut off my left hand into two.
I saw part of my cut-off hand on the ground bouncing up and down. I then realized that if in the first attempt to kill me the Fulani man cut off my hand, unless I do something to protect myself, this Fulani man would no doubt in his second attempt to kill me cut off my head.”
The pastor rushed at him, wrestled with him and held him, in spite of his severed, bleeding hand. While held on the ground the herdsman was still gripping the sword, and the pastor managed to snatch it from him. The assailant ran away.
“I was there and the blood from my cut-off hand was rushing out,” Pastor Alkali said. “I started shouting and calling on some brethren working on farms close to mine to help rescue me. They came and pursued the Fulani man. But then they could not get him, and so they returned to find ways of taking me to the hospital.”
They took him first to the police station at Sabon Gida, where he pastors a congregation of 80 people, and from there police took him to the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi.
Pastor Alkali said he has never had any conflicts with the assailant, whom he had never met before, or any other Fulani herdsman, so he was surprised that he was attacked for no apparent reason except that he was a Christian pastor.
Throughout years of doing ministry in Sabon Gida he has enjoyed good rapport with both Christians and Muslims, he said. Many Muslims visited him in the hospital, he said.
“Both the Muslim leader in community and chief imam of the mosque in the village also visited me here in this hospital,” he said. “And this is all because of the way and manner I related well with them while working as a pastor there.”
A father of four, Pastor Alkali had pastored Sabon Gida Baptist Church between 1992 and 1996 and then retired, but in 2011 members of another congregation (undisclosed for security reasons) asked him to pastor their church.
He said that since Jesus Christ was persecuted, Christians must endure hardship and face any persecution head-on.
“Every Christian that is passing through persecution should stand firm, as God will not abandon such a person,” he said. “Our persecutors should know that one day they will stand before God to account for what they done here on earth. So what they should do is to come closer to God. They should repent and leave the evil ways they are following.”
“There are many out there who are victims of such attacks, and they are suffering,” he said.

“These armed Fulani men are killing innocent people in Nigeria. The best thing that needs to be done by the Federal Government of Nigeria is that it must act to end these atrocities against Christians. These killers should be stopped.”

Arms Fraud: 'We want to return our loot,' Metuh, Amosu, Umar beg EFCC

It was also gathered that the EFCC has stepped up security around its key witnesses against suspects on trial for the $2.1 billion arms deals scandal following threats to their lives

Three of those currently being tried by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on corruption charges have reportedly expressed eagerness to return their alleged loot - cash and property, to escape jail time.

Citing a source at the EFCC, The Nation reports that the anti-graft agency has received requests to refund 'stolen funds' from former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olisa Metuh, ex-Chiefs of Air Staff Air Marshals Adeshola Amosu and Mohammed Umar.
Metuh is on trial for collecting N400 million from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki - the cash believed to be part of the diverted $2.1 billion meant to procure arms for the military.
Umar was arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja on a seven-count charge bordering on money laundering, criminal breach of trust and corruption of about N9.7 billion.
While Amosu was arraigned  at a  Federal High Court in Lagos alongside Air Vice marshal (AVM) Jacob Adigun and Air Commodore Gbadebo Olugbenga, on a 26-count of siphoning about N50 billion.
“We have formally received letters of plea bargain from three accused persons  — Metuh, Umar and Amosu— we are studying their terms," the source told the newspaper on Tuesday, July 20.
“We may enter into a plea bargain with the accused persons if it will serve the public interest. The interest is getting back the stolen funds. If they can fulfill this condition (public interest), we may accept their offers.”
The details of the request was, however, not revealed, as the source stressed that the EFCC is still studying them.
It was also gathered that the Commission has stepped up security around its key witnesses against suspects on trial for the $2.1 billion arms deals scandal following threats to life from unknown persons.
The witnesses being threatened are those against a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, ex-Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, and ex-Chiefs of Air Staff Amosu and Umar, including Metuh's.
Most of the witnesses are said to be from the account, procurement, and audit units of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Air Force, the Army, and some government departments

N223bn Diezani Bribe: EFCC Detains Abia INEC Commissioner

1a1
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Abia State, Mr. Sylvester Ezeani, for his alleged role in the N23bn ($115m) that was disbursed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.
According to the EFCC, the suspect allegedly received N20m while he was the REC in Cross River State during the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
An EFCC operative told our correspondent that the REC had failed to explain what the N20m was for and had thus been detained.
He said, “The REC was on Tuesday interrogated by operatives of the EFCC in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in connection with an alleged N20million electoral scam.
“While serving in Cross River State, he was alleged to have collected the sum of N20m out of the entire N241,000,000 which was released to Cross River State from the controversial $115million lodged with Fidelity Bank Plc, by Diezani. Ezeani, who has now been redeployed in Abia State, was quizzed over his involvement in the scam. He is still in custody.”
Meanwhile, the commission also quizzed the lawmaker representing Oron federal constituency of Akwa Ibom State, Nse Bassey Ekpenyong, for his alleged involvement in a certificate forgery scam.
According to the anti-graft agency, Ekpenyong ran into trouble when a non-governmental organisation petitioned the EFCC, alleging that he committed perjury and financial crimes by submitting a forged Ordinary National Diploma/ statement of result of the Abia State Polytechnic to the Independent National Electoral Commission in the build-up to the 2015 National Assembly election.
The petitioner also alleged that Ekpenyong fraudulently obtained salaries, allowances and other financial benefits from his contrived certificate.
A detective at the commission said, “Investigations by the EFCC showed that Ekpenyong did not attend the polytechnic as alleged by the petitioner and the OND certificate did not emanate from the institution. Further investigations are ongoing on the case. Ekpenyong has been released on bail.”

Nigeria heading into recession

Nigeria heading into recession, says IMF

The IMF slashed its growth forecast for the Nigerian economy this year on Tuesday, saying a combination of plunging oil revenues and weakened investor confidence will push it into recession.
The International Monetary Fund said it expects Africa's largest economy to contract by 1.8 percent this year, after having forecast in April a 2.3 percent expansion.
Nigeria's stall, and sluggish activity in the number two economy, South Africa, is expected to pull down economic growth across sub-Saharan Africa, the IMF said, forecasting a "dramatic implication."
"In 2016, regional output growth will fall short of population growth, implying declining per capita incomes," it said.
Nigeria's economy has been battered hard by the plunge in oil prices, the main source of the country's income, as well as prices of other key commodities.
In addition, rebels in the southern oil region have forced crude production cutbacks, and internal unrest, especially attacks by the Boko Haram group in the north, has also hurt the economy.
Inflation hit an 11-year high of 16.5 percent in June as prices of food and energy jumped after the government freed up the naira currency in April, allowing it to plummet against the US dollar.
Also weighing on output have been electricity shortages due to rebels' sabotage of the gas pipelines that fire power plants.

Abiola Ajimobi

The All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Oyo State branch, has apologised to the state government over the June 6 violent disturbances in Ibadan.

This is contained in a statement signed by Ranti Obafunmisoand Mathew Ogunkunle, the state Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
According to them, the apology is on behalf of principals, teachers and students of schools across the state.
Obafunmiso and Ogunkunle said that the association dissociated its members from any group or association that might have instigated the students to embark on the ugly incident.
``ANCOPPS wishes to tender its unreserved apology to Oyo State Government on behalf of all principals, teachers and students of all public secondary schools in the state on the violent incident that happened on June 6.
``The incident threatened the peace and security of the state and endangered the lives of the students, who participated in the breach of peace and affront on constituted authority,’’ they said.
They said the association condemned the act and reiterated their stance as ambassadors and advocate of moral uprightness and good conduct.
The chairman and secretary pledged the association’s support and cooperation to Gov. Abiola Ajimobi-led administration, urging him to accept its apology.
NAN reports that some secondary school students in the state had on June 6 took to the street to protest against government’s planned public/private participatory management of schools in the state.
The group of teachers and students had demonstrated over speculations that the government had sold their schools.
However, the state government had strongly denied the allegations, describing it as baseless and unfounded.
